Adaptation to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region

Baltadapt Final Conference | 3–4 September 2013 | Riga, Latvia

The conference "Adaptation to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region" was a further step towards the political endorsement and the implementation of the Baltic Sea Region Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and its accompanying Action Plan which were officially presented during the event. More than 120 participants – policy makers across all levels, scientists and other stakeholders dealing with climate change adaptation in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond – gathered to discuss practical achievements, gaps and the next required steps in Baltic Sea Region cooperation on climate change adaptation. 
During the conference, participants had the unique possibility to experience the Geodome, an inflatable visualisation theatre featuring interactive sessions and films on climate scenarios and climate change adaptation. The conference was hosted by the University of Latvia.

Third Baltadapt Policy Forum

29–30 May 2013 | Tallinn, Estonia

The third Policy Forum on Climate Change Adaptation in the Baltic Sea Region took place 29 – 30 May 2013 in Tallinn. It brought together participants from all Baltic Sea Region countries. The event was organised by the Council of the Baltic Sea States, CBSS, in close cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Environment.

Second Baltadapt Policy Forum

10–11 December 2012 | Stockholm, Sweden

The second out of three highlevel policy fora on climate change adaptation in the Baltic Sea Region focused on the further development of the first draft of the strategy document along with interactive working sessions on the expected impact of climate change on agriculture, biodiversity, spatial planning and civil security in the Baltic Sea Region.

Adapting agricultural practices and production to climate change

Stakeholder Workshop | 30–31 May 2012 | Norrköping, Sweden

Farming within the Baltic Sea Region will have to meet new challenges. At the same time as agriculture will have to reduce emissions of nutrients to the Baltic Sea and to other ecosystems, it will be necessary to adapt agricultural practices to a changing climate. Many problems and opportunities will be shared by farmers from neighboring countries, whereas others might be significantly different due to diverse natural or societal conditions.

First Baltadapt Policy Forum

24 April 2012 | Berlin, Germany

At the 2012 “Baltic Sea Day” in Berlin, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, in close cooperation with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment organized the first Policy Forum as kick-off event for the working process on a proposal for a Baltadapt Strategy. Participants were high level policy makers from relevant national ministries, the European Commission, international and regional organizations and academic institutions in the field of climate change and adaptation.

Third Baltadapt partner meeting

16–18 January 2012 | Helsinki, Finland

The Finnish Environment Institute hosted the third transnational Baltadapt partner meeting. It took place in Helsinki in January 2012. In conjunction with the partner meeting, Baltadapt partners SMHI and CBSS Baltic 21 held the strategy workshop "Towards a macro-regional climate change adaptation strategy for the Baltic Sea Region" which brought together representatives from various projects and initiatives deadling with climate change adaptation in the BSR.

Climate knowledge for regional coastal stakeholders in the eastern Baltic Sea Region

Second Baltadapt partner meeting

20–22 June 2011 | Tallinn, Estonia

The second transnational partner meeting of the Baltadapt project was held in Tallinn, Estonia from 20–22 June 2011. It was hosted by the Estonian Marine Institute.

Fifth Baltadapt Partner Meeting

10–12 April 2013 | Vilnius, Lithuania

The fifth transnational Baltadapt partner meeting took place in Vilnius, Lithuania 10–12 April 2013. It was hosted by the Baltic Environmental Forum (BEF) Lithuania. Baltadapt partners discussed, inter alia,  the current drafts of both the Baltic Sea Region Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and its accompanying Action Plan.

Fourth Baltadapt partner meeting

26–28 September 2012 | Berlin, Germany

The Germen Federal Ministry for the Environment hosted the fourth internal Baltadapt partner meeting in Berlin, Germany.
Baltadapt partners discussed the relevant inputs from the project's impact & vulnerability assessment reports into the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and the Action Plan for adapting the Baltic Sea Region to Climate Change.

Climate Change and Tourism – responding to Baltic Sea wide Challenges

Stakeholder Workshop | 2–3 May 2012 | Warnemünde, Germany

The tourism sector within the Baltic Sea Region will have to meet new challenges. At the same time as tourism needs to limit its impact on the environment, it will be necessary to adapt to the consequences of a changing climate. Many problems and opportunities will be shared by those active in the tourism sector in the Baltic Sea Region, whereas others might be significantly different due to diverse natural or societal conditions.

Strategy Workshop

17 January 2012 | Helsinki, Finland

The EUSBSR strategy calls for the development of a “regional adaptation strategy at the level of the Baltic Sea Region” which would provide a useful framework for strengthening co-operation and sharing information across the region on this issue. Baltadapt was developed as a response to this priority in the EUSBSR. Today, Baltadapt partners and networks are on their way developing a Baltic Sea Region-wide climate change adaptation strategy.
