Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI)

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) is a government agency under the Swedish Ministry of the Environment. SMHI's mission is to manage and develop information on weather, water and climate that provides knowledge and advanced decision-making data for public services, the private sector and the general public. SMHI aims to contribute to increased social benefit, safety and a sustainable society.

SMHI uses models to study the influence of climate and nutrient loads on the coastal and marine environment, in projects including AMBER, BalticWay, ECOSUPPORT and INFLOW within the BONUS programme. As part of the Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research (CSPR), SMHI has expertise in the field of model-assisted participatory processes for vulnerability and adaptation assessments.

SMHI’s role in Baltadapt

In the project, SMHI is coordinating the development of the climate change adaptation strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. Based on integrated competence in the fields of climatology, oceanography and hydrology, SMHI is also leading a working group identifying and reviewing current knowledge on regional climate information.
