Federal Environment Agency (UBA)
The Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) is Germany’s central federal authority on environmental matters. Its key mandates are to provide scientific consulting for political processes in support of the Federal Government, to ensure the implementation of environmental laws, and inform the public about environmental protection.
UBA was mandated by the German Ministry of Environment (BMU) to establish a competence centre on Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation in Germany (KomPass) in 2006, which now hosts the German clearinghouse on adaptation and interlinks with European processes.
UBA played a substantial role in the development of the German Strategy for Adaptation to climate change (DAS) and is actively involved in its implementation. This includes the preparation and coordination of the the German Plan for Adaptation Action (APA).
UBA's role in Baltadapt
In Baltadapt, UBAs main focus draws on the development of a concept to conduct a vulnerability analyses of the Baltic Sea Region and to coordinate the development of a Baltic Window. This aims to become an one-stop-shop information portal on climate change in the Baltic Sea Region in connection with European adaptation processes. It further supports Baltadapt stakeholder participation processes with national expertise and the working group on coastal matters.
